Mosquita y Mari

This film did a lot of things correctly when it comes to the struggle of being in a Latine household in the US. The film brought up topics without them being the main focus or only purpose of the film.

One of the scenes that stuck with me had the song "Mi Corazon es Para Ti". This is when Yolanda gets in the car with her old friends and is smoking with them. It's so weird to see her in this environment because the more you watch the movie the more you see those friends don't really care for her. When it came to smoking with them in the car it was different, her relationship with Mari was intimate and accepting of each other. This is extremely evident with the ice cream scene. Yolanda doesn't cut off her routine (of getting a treat after school) but shifts it to share with her friend.

A big topic the film touched on was how the community responds and acts around girls. This goes back to the chismoso (gossipy) man that owned the little corner store. This MAN could not get out of their lives. From the beginning, we saw conflict between them...I mean Mari did steal but that's beside the point. Man didn't know the full story and went ahead and told her parents. I can't tell you how MUCH this happens especially when everyone knows each other. I also liked seeing both responses to the man's accusations and how they defended their daughters in front of him.

There is truth behind the movie and while you can't generalize on everyone's experiences Mosquita y Mari show truths. Truths in the mothers' responses; one being accusatory and the other questionable. The truth of expecting 100% on every exam because "it's your job". And the expectation that your story ends when you are undocumented. The subtle truths are what attract me to the film.

  1. I obviously loved this movie! I love that you brought attention to the car smoking scene and her friends in general bc that felt v uncomfy for me as the viewer. I feel like idk that they didn't care for Yolanda, but i do think they were going down a not so safe route. I feel like we've all got friends who smoke, drink, and vibe with the drama attached to the party life, and to say that they don't care about her seems incorrect. That one moment where Mari went to work, Yolanda went right back to her friends and i felt like the fact that they didn't question why was their way of being their friend. either way they def werent the right fit for Yolanda long term, but i loved that they coordinated outfits lmao!

  2. Subtle truth ,that's a good one. I thought at one point that it was just a well made movie, but when it ended sort of in an unexpected place was when I realized how effective its approach to telling these subtle truths really was.
